How Do You Address Performance Issues?
February 9th, 2018Performance issues at your organization can have a detrimental impact on productivity. One underperforming worker can frustrate the entire staff as other workers are forced to step up to pick up the slack and could become resentful.
It’s important to make sure your human resources are working to their full potential, which means you need to take the right steps as soon as a performance issue arises. Some of the key things you should consider doing include:
- Providing regular feedback. Close to 60 percent of survey respondents asked about workplace feedback indicate they would like to receive feedback on a weekly basis. This number is even higher among younger employees, as 72 percent of workers under 30 want to receive weekly feedback. Not only that, but 69 percent of employees indicated they would work harder if they felt they got more recognition for their efforts.
- Set clear, objective goals: Staff members, especially those who are struggling, want to know exactly what they need to do to satisfy your expectations. By setting clear and objective goals, staff members learn exactly what they are supposed to do. You won’t have problems with members of your staff not knowing what success means for them and you’ll also be able to quickly and easily spot exactly when someone is underperforming so you can take swift action to correct the issue.
- Create a plan for improvement: If there are areas where an employee is falling short, set up a process to help that employee improve. This could mean providing additional training to the staff member or it could mean the employee needs to increase their efforts. Work with the employee to create a plan of action so everyone is on the same page about when and how improvement will occur.
